Canton offers a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities for both children and adults. The athletic fields, ice arenas, playgrounds, fitness centers, museums and theaters are available for public use.
GOLF
There are two 18-hole golf courses, the St. Lawrence Golf and Country
Club, and the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club offering the St. Lawrence Valley's finest golfing.
The St. Lawrence University Indoor Golf Training Center offers the unique experience of playing golf at some of the finest golf courses in the country.
HOCKEY
St. Lawrence University offers exciting men's and women's Division I hockey. Some of the best collegiate hockey can be seen at Appleton Arena.
SUNY Canton offers exciting junior college hockey at the Canton Recreational Pavilion. The team has many national junior college championships to their credit.
Canton Central High School offers the New York State Division I boys hockey program. The team has won the New York State championship 4 times. The school is a pioneer in the state with a girls varsity hockey team.
The Canton Pee Wee Association offers minor league hockey.
RECREATION
The Remington Recreation Trail, surrounding the Partridge Run Gold & Country Club is a 5K trail for walking, jogging, cycling, roller blading and cross country skiing.
Canton Pee Wee Association sponsors minor hockey, Pee Wee baseball, football, soccer, softball and lacross for students in grades 4-8 and wrestling for middle school students.
The Canton Recreation Department offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities year round at the Bend in the River Park, Canton Recreational Pavilion, Taylor Park Beach and playgrounds throughout the village. The Canton Recreational Pavilion is home to the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club, Canton Minor Hockey as well as mens and womens hockey teams.
RUNNING
Since 1977, the Stillman Foote Running Club has presented a year-round
schedule of races and "fun runs," including the winter "Frozen Foote" and "Summer Sunset"
series.
BIKING
The Canton Bicycle Club has weekly races and duathlons, and has hosted
two conventions with riders from all over the United States.
CANOEING
Canoeing on the Grass and Little Rivers is a favorite pasttime for over
100 years, and each spring the Rushton Canoe Races attract hundreds of
visitors to Canton. The St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers Club offers a variety of canoeing and kayaking events throughout the year.
SNOWMOBILING
The St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association maintains and grooms over 500 miles of snowmobile trails for public use.
SPORTSMEN
The Canton Sportsmen's Club sponsors horseshoe tournaments, softball
tournaments, the gas and steam engine show and events associated with hunting, fishing and
snowmobiling.
CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL
The St. Lawrence County Historical Association is based in the historic Canton home of Governor Silas Wright Jr. The nationally accredited
Silas Wright House includes five period rooms with furnishings from the 1830's-1870's, a Main Gallery with changing exhibits on local history, and a Children's Attic with hands-on history for kids.
The Historical Association also operates an archive with numerous resources for local and family history researchers.
TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate NY) documents and presents a variety of local traditions, customs and folk art. Changing exhibits on topics such as basket making, quilting and food customs are on display in their gallery. The Folkstore features traditional regional crafts.
The Grasse River Players, a community theatre group, stages productions
throughout the year.
St. Lawrence University hosts the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express
yearly and their own productions, plus well-known contemporary bands.
VACATION DESTINATIONS
The St. Lawrence Seaway, the Thousand Islands, the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, the "Olympic
Village" of Lake Placid, the Ottawa Valley and countless wilderness lakes and rivers are
easy day trips for boating, hiking skiing, canoeing and swimming.
