Education
In an ideal location, St. Lawrence University is a diverse liberal arts learning community of inspiring faculty, serious students, and accomplished alumni, guided by tradition and focused on the future. Its mission is to provide an inspiring and demanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts to students selected for their seriousness of purpose and intellectual promise. Founded April 3, 1856, it is the oldest continuously coeducational institution of higher learning in New York State. The University enrolls 2,100-2,200 undergraduate students from throughout the United States and around 50 nations, and about 120 graduate students in a non-residential Master of Education program. Over 95 percent of the undergraduates reside on campus and enjoy a student-faculty ratio of 11:1. St. Lawrence considers its location one of its greatest assets, asserting to prospective and current students that ³St. Lawrence¹s location will shape who you are and who you will be.² Simply put, St. Lawrence would not be St. Lawrence if it were located anywhere else in the nation. The community is welcomed on campus for a wide variety of lectures, performances, exhibitions and athletic contests throughout the academic year. Its partnership with the region is further strengthened through support of outstanding North Country students and through two initiatives of co-investment in the economic health of the community, the Canton Initiative and the Coming Home Initiative.
